Yoga for eyesight

Eyes are one of the most precious and vital parts of our body. Just imagine a world without vision. I’m pretty sure one wouldn’t ever think of imagining a horrifying experience of not having vision for even a single minute.  Since eyes are very soft and sophisticated they need extra care and nourishment. If the face is said to be the index of the mind, which you can read, then eyes are the windows of the soul.

As time goes on the muscles around the eyes lose their strength. These muscles lose their flexibility with time thereby becoming rigid and hard. It results in the weakening of eyesight and other problems. The weakening of eyesight makes it difficult to focus at different distances and that also affects the brain function causing stress and anxiety.

On relaxing the muscles of the eyes, the eyesight gets drastically improved. There is a very deep relation between the eyes and brain, as eyesight occupies around 40% of the brain’s capacity. The eyes health totally depends on the level of relaxation and on closing the eyes the relaxation ultimately is induced in the brain. When it comes to relaxation then nothing is better than Yoga practices.

  • Asanas for Eye sight

Shavasana or the corpse posture: The asana is very simple and you just need to lie motionless on the floor then close your eyes and relax all the body parts. The asana is basically a relaxing technique for the eyes as to perform the exercise the entire body must be relaxed.

Palming: This eye exercise is very helpful and has a calming effect on the nervous system. Palming breaks the stress as the eye needs some darkness to get out of the stress caused by the light. So in this exercise cover the eyes with your palm and breathe deeply in and out that helps in blood circulation though the nerves.

Horizontal eye movement: For this you have to move the eyes from left to right and right to left then relax your eyes by covering them with hands over the eyes. The process continues as you move your eyes in a diagonal manner and then rotate your eyes in a full circle clockwise and then anti-clockwise. Continue doing so about 10 times.

Trataka (gazing): This technique helps in improving the vision and also the concentration level. In the process sit straight then keep your eyes open and start gazing on any object or picture. Continue it till tears roll down from the eye. Don’t stress the eyes and breathe deeply in and out.

Now you can move to Pranayama and meditation. In pranayama you have to do a simple breathing exercise in the ratio of 4:4:4 that means breathe to a count of 4 hold it to the count of 4 and release it to the count of 4.

The next step is followed by meditation by chanting ‘Om’ to relax and attain tranquility.
