Advertisers are all set to bank on the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the first manned landing on the moon. They have sensed the value of a âcommercial commemorationâ of this event and an opportunity to bask in âmoonlitâ glory. The anniversary is the subject of advertising campaigns, books, DVDs, tribute merchandise, events and film festivals.
Louis Vuitton is running a print ad featuring astronauts Sally Ride, Edwin Aldrin and Jim Lovell. The ad, carrying the theme âSome journeys change mankind forever,â is part of a campaign that includes a video clip about their âodyssey into space,â which is to be available on a special Web site.
A print ad for a special Omega watch invokes John F. Kennedy. Omega is selling a version of its Speedmaster Professional watch â which was worn into space by the astronauts, including Mr. Aldrin .
The Turner Classic Movies cable channel, part of the Turner Broadcasting System unit of Time Warner plans to show 13 movies about the moon and space travel from 6 a.m. July 20 to 6 a.m. July 21.
The New York Times Company also joins the bandwagon. It will offer items like commemorative newspapers and copies of the front page of the July 21, 1969, issue of The Times, signed by Mr. Aldrin.
