Down’s Syndrome: Alternative Medicine

Top Alternative Medicine

1. Child and behavioral issues

Once a child is born with Down’s syndrome, chances are likely that he/she may encounter behavioral issues like impulsive or reclusive behaviour. In such a condition, it is always good to consult a psychiatrist. For some parents, but, one must remember that going to a psych doctor doesn’t mean that he has a medical condition. In fact he is there to help your child build social confidence and become more realistic. Simple visits to the doctor will make things easier for him and he/she will be able to carry on their lives on their own. Of course, this will involve money and family support but this will be nothing less then a long term investment made to bring smile on everyone’s face. It does not have any side effects but only some time investment which maybe longer than your patience.

2. Simple exercise and yoga

Exercise is something which helps even a medically fit person to maintain his health throughout his life. So, this simple thing will definitely help your child or any other person in your family affected with Down’s syndrome to overcome the complications of it. Another good alternate method is Yoga which is fast catching in US and Europe as well. An ancient Indian (Asia) method of treating diseases has been found to be very effecting in overcoming the difficulties of DS. Anyone who practices these two on routine basis is bound to lead a better life. It must be understood here that these therapies involve money in the beginning when they are being learnt, but that is only in the initial stage. Once learnt, they can be done on ones own. It should also be understood that these are life – time therapies which if done on regular basis keeps the patient of DS fit.

3. Cutting down the weight

In a study carried out by American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAID), it has been found out that those with this chromosomal disorder have high weight ratio than without this complication. Being overweight itself is considered a major health concern in general public, seeing its bad side effects, it has raised more attention among those living with DS. It has been suggested that methods like walking, playing, curbing fat filled foods and exercise be a necessary part of DS patients to cut down the side effects like heart disease and muscle atrophy. In fact, it has been categorised at utmost priority in the life of a DS patient. It is assumed here that cutting down ones weight does not necessarily involve money. Simple homely methods and little exercise can do wonders in this case. What’s more, it can be done anywhere – at home or at travelling – the question lies in dedication.

4. Social acceptance

Ever felt lonely in a long term disease or ever felt the need of your loved ones when you are back from a stay in hospital? Admittedly, everyone would say yes!! Well, as simple as that. People suffering from Down’s syndrome always feel the need of home, love, care, attention and that is generally more than a non – DS person would ask for. Most of the time a patient suffering from this disorder will not ask for it, but they do need it all the time. And, this is what any psychologist would tell – “as a patient from DS generally finds himself/herself out of the common crowd and need people to help them out in their daily chores, they automatically look for more attention. If this attention is given to them (which requires a lot of patience), they will definitely survive more”. And of course, this care and attention works more than any medicine does. Definitely, no one will ask if it demands money or how much time it takes!!

5. Ayurvedic medicines

There are so many people in US and Europe who travel down to Asia to get alternate medicine for Down’s syndrome. While some of the patients do not find any relief, there are hundreds of others for whom these have done wonders. This treatment includes medicines like terminalaia chebula, pippali, vitis vinifera, musta, kuchla, indrayav, ghrut – gugglu and strychnos nuxvomica. If one has tried hundreds of other methods with no result, than one must try this method of treatment. Though it is a long term treatment stretching over years, but it is indeed good for people to whom it suits! In fact, it’s a gamble on must play if nothing else is working.

6. Vitamin therapy

As per the research results of The Sierra International Clinic located in Tijuana (DS Treatment Centre), it has been discovered that vitamins are especially good in treating patients with this disorder. A good multi- vitamin supplement has been found to improve the speech, intelligence quotient and co-ordination among the patients of Down’s syndrome. After this study it is suggested that a good multi – vitamin be taken by patients suffering with Down’s syndrome. For certain, it does involve money as one buys vitamins every month, but, they are good for lifetime.

7. Amino acid balancing

Amino acids are an integral part of our whole body complex. Any imbalance in them can lead to big medical problem. In Down Syndrome patients especially, it is required to keep a good balance of amino acids. In patients suffering from this disease, amino acids like cysteine, isoleucine, leucine, and tryptophan are found to be in higher proportions in brain levels wherein in blood levels they have been found to be at reduced levels. In a study carried out by nutritional medicine practitioners’, it has been concluded that to treat DS, it is very important to keep amino acid levels at check. So, medicines which keep these at appropriate levels are generally administered to those with Down’s syndrome. The cost involved can be little high in this therapy as compared to other ones, but then, if this is the only solution, then it must be taken. It might also involve certain tests at different time making it impossible to travel for a certain period, but once the tests are over, one can proceed the way he had been doing. The time duration of this therapy differs from patient to patient depending on their response.

8. Oxidants, anti–oxidants

In a study carried out on down syndrome patients, it has been found out that the gene for enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) is generally at higher levels leading to increased levels of free radicals. It has been further revealed that this causes oxidative damage in brain areas filled with higher levels of SOD. Therefore, it is suggested by health professionals all over the world that patients with DS take anti-oxidant supplements on regular basis. This will make their brain live young for a longer period of life as well they would live a longer life. Of course, anti-oxidants are costlier than general medicines, but they are also more effective than other ones. How much or for how long they will be required depends only upon the patient and the doctor.

9. Joining a social group

This may not sound like an actual medicine, but joining any social group which really works for Down Syndrome, will act more like a medicine. All over US and Europe there are hundreds of such associations who work for down syndrome patients only. Joining them or by making your child join such a group will not only make things better f but also give practical view of the outside world. Such institutions either charge a nominal fee while some work voluntarily. Look out for the one which is near to your home or office and see how things will change in a positive manner!

10. Neuropathology

Abnormal phosphorylated tau protein is generally found in patients with Down syndrome leading to neuronal loss. Presences of diffused plaques further indicate damage to the neural muscles. In order to treat these, neuropathology is practised. This treatment is important as in some cases Down’s syndrome may lead to dementia – making it really difficult for patients to survive. As dementia affects their learning and socially behaving ability, it is important that it be treated with care and good medical care. Generally, in such a case generally ICD – 10 is administered among other alternate methods of treatment. One must note here that this can be a costly affair as compared to other therapies; but then it is generally given in those cases where other therapies are not working. Time duration for the treatment depends on the response of the patient.

11. Sicca cell therapy

Sicca cell therapy developed by Prof. Dr. Niehans and Dr. Block is based on the experiments that damaged or spent cells can be regenerated by living cells from certain breed of young animals. It has been found out that young cells of certain animals have the capacity to regenerate or give strength to old cells of human beings and revive them to a certain level. That means heart cells from an animal have the capacity to put energy in a human heart. In this type of medical treatment, only original living cells are used. This therapy is one of the most acclaimed methods for DS patients. Although it involves money and time in ample, it is also considered one of the best treatments yet.
