Yahoo, in a counter balancing move, inked a deal with the publishers of 176 U.S. newspapers to sell them advertising. The deal will enable the publishers to use the technology of Yahoo to sell help-wanted advertising and it will offer an array of local information service. Google’s recent move to enter into selling ads to print media has of course put its core rival Yahoo in a tight spot. The latest development indicates that Yahoo’s strategy is to counter the entry of Google into print media and to move into untapped local segment of advertising.

The financial details of the deal are not known for the moment. The list of publishers includes Belo Corp., Cox Newspapers Inc., Hearst Newspapers, Journal Register Co., Lee Enterprises Inc., MediaNews Group and E.W. Scripps Co. Their paper circulates in 38 U.S. states.

However, the recent clash of titans in their bid to expand advertising base has provided the publishers a very good opportunity to expand their audience and advertising revenue as the industry was struggling to raise the constantly slipping ad revenue.
