Main Motives of CSR

One of the major concerns raised by the discourse on Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR is associated with the motives of the corporations – whether they are attempting to do what is considered to be right or engaging in good solely for marketing purposes.

View of Critics

There are a number of critics who tend to poke fun at the practice of communal responsibility, when it is seen to contrast with the overall activities of the corporation. They believe the concept to be a deception or a façade of sorts. Thus, selective deeds do not in any way indicate what the corporation is really up to, but act as a type of artificial ploy to cover up the fact that the corporation is involved in some corrupt or socially negligent activities.

It is up to society in general and the shareholders in particular to thoroughly investigate the approach taken by a specific corporation, especially when they are attempting to portray their activities as being reflective of a general attitude to business.

View of Society

The community is entitled to evaluate the exploits and indicate irregularities with the points being presented. It is necessary to differentiate between the significance of the notion of social liability and the incapacity of all corporations to proceed with its implementation. There are examples of both shortcomings as well as corporations that are faring well.

It is necessary that people understand the importance of being viewed as a positive member of the community. There are a few companies which pave the way by actually being dedicated to initiating a positive change in their society. Others may be interested in employing programs in order to be regarded as positive corporate citizens.

However, it may not be wise to disapprove of those corporations that have not grown adequately in their attitude towards CSR. Even if they act in a hypocritical manner, it is not justified to prevent them from contributing to the community.

Motives – Personal Interests vs. Community

Corporations happen to be legal entities. They form a part of a community and consequently, need to be seen as providers to the community. Shareholders are required to be in the know about the activities a company is involved in. Corporations should inform everyone about their current actions so that the community stays updated and also to display their leadership skills.

Actions which may seem to be geared towards serving the interests of a company can still be applauded. However, they cannot just provide money anonymously as it would prove to be troublesome. The worth of the named responsibility leads to increased communications with that particular section of society. Companies have now shifted their attention from only generating money to possessing giving profiles. They need to continue with their philanthropic activities in spite of the incessant criticism.

However, providing money in order to support a specific cause does not automatically make a company wholly pure in whatever action it carries out. It is a commendable choice, no doubt, and they need to be sufficiently praised for it. But they need to be held equally liable.
