According to a recent study, only 20 percent European iPod owners buy songs online regularly. The study clearly signals towards music industry to trust more on other ways to recover revenue lost due to piracy and illegal downloading. The study, carried out by Jupiter Research further reveals that Europe’s digital music market is likely to 385 million euros, just double of what it was previous year. Shockingly, iPod owners on an average buy only 20 tracks a year from Apple’s iTunes music store.

In fact, many iPod owners illegally exchange songs by using file-sharing networks or they prefer to listen to the audio files available online for free legally. There is another interesting trend; many consumers in Europe are more interested in buying CDs online than buying downloads available online. There is one more hiccup in the problem, that is compatibility off different formats of audio files and their running devices such as iTunes are only compatible to the iPods.

However, the study has stated that there is no need to panic as this model of digital music is not collapsing but there is an imperative need for improvement and at present, it is just underperforming its potential.
