A cruise line advertisement landed in controversy as the ad has shown King Kamehameha, the man who united the Hawaiian islands, holding a glass of champagne. The advertisement was published in several publications for travel agents for the Miami based Celebrity Cruises. However, the company has quickly pulled off the ad soon after the controversy started to gather momentum. The company is also planning to publish apology in two major newspapers of Hawaii this week.
Moreover, the ad has infuriated the native Hawaiians as they have labeled it as disrespectful and disgusting. Now outraged Hawaiian groups are contemplating to file a lawsuit against Celebrity Cruise Lines saying an apology is not enough.
The controversial ad bearing a strap line that reads as, ‘Come here and have a drink with the Hawaiians’, against which the Hawaiians have said, ‘that’s not what we’re all about.’
