Feldenkrais method is a non-invasive unique system of re-education in the movement patterns of individuals. This therapy has the ability to bring changes in the movement patterns of individuals and provide relief to their physical as well as emotional problems.

It is commonly followed by athletes, dancers, artists, sportspersons and such other people involved in the work of body movement system.

History

Feldenkrais method was introduced by Dr Feldenkrais, a scientist when he discovered that by modifying the movement patterns, one can become aware of the self. He appreciated the need to improve movement system in order to heal the self and treat symptoms like pain, immobility.

 

Principle

The Feldenkrais method is based on the concept of mechanics, physics combined with a practical understanding of human and psychological development. The therapy proposes the idea of improving self awareness and consciousness in the movements of body parts.  This is said to improve the functional abilities and reduce complaints like decreased movement, pain.

 

Method

The Feldenkrais method is practiced as a Functional Integration lesson, where the therapist with the help of hands, guides the patients in their movements. If the therapy is practiced in a group, the therapist verbally guides through the sessions and the patients move according to the instructions. When required, the therapist provides support and help in dealing with restrictions in movement.

Another type of class is performed using Awareness through movement. In this class, the clients are involved in movement involving thought, sensation and imagination.

This method of healing is known to provide physical as well as emotional and general benefits. People often feel a sense of positivity and the exercises not only focus on physical movements but mainly on the consciousness of the movement. It helps to develop self-image and also relieves musculoskeletal disorders and pain.

Indications

Some of the ailments in which this method is found to be useful are neck and shoulder pain, back pain and stiffness, arthritis and joint pain, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. This may also be used by performers who need to make physical appearance with increase creativity like dancers, artists and stage performers.
