Telstra forced to change misleading Next G ads

Telstra was recently forced to change its advertisements for the Next G mobile phone network after the consumer watchdog said that the advertisement was misleading. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has considered Telstra’s advertisements as misleading, as the firm does not provide coverage to entire Australia. However, Telstra has said that the changes were made well before the telco was even approached by the consumer watchdog.

The ACCC had expressed its serious concern over about Telstra’s unqualified use of the punch lines ‘Everywhere you need it’ and ‘Get the coverage you need with Telstra’s Next G network’. They had argued, ‘the whole of Australia is not covered and coverage is not always available where consumers need it’.

Telstra and the ACCC have been at loggerheads over a wide range of regulatory matters, including the prices it can charge rivals to access its copper wire network.
