‘Sucker’ ad is not offensive, says ASA

A newspaper advertisement recently shot up to controversy as it has shown a boy using an asthma inhaler, carrying the headline ‘sucker’.

However, the advertising supervisory body Advertising Standards Authority has set aside the allegations, saying the advertisement was not offensive. The ASA had received as many as 26 complaints regarding the ad alleging it may discourage children to use it.

On the other hand, Channel 4 has claimed that the ad was aiming to grab adults’ attention. In the meanwhile, it was also alleged that the ad maligned and disgraced the sufferers.

ASA in its report advocated the company’s point of view as it hold that the word ‘sucker’ was used to grab adult’s attention.
