In a recent ad gimmick in South Africa Pretoria’s ‘name change’ has been used to inform that Nampak’s Twinsoft toilet paper has adopted a different name. The text of the ad can be read as, ‘If Pretoria can do it, we can, too. Twinsoft has changed its name to Twinsaver Luxury 2-ply’.
However, Genootskap vir die Handhawing van Afrikaans (GHA) was quick to raise the issue alleging that the ad tells Pretoria’s name has been changed while the city is still known as ‘Pretoria’.
On the other hand, the advertising authority has acknowledged the company’s argument that highlights the fact that the municipality, previously known as Pretoria, is now known as Tshwane. Further, it has been concluded by the authority that the ad emphasized the product’s name change.
