NDP’s ‘porn’ TV ad lands in controversy

This television advertisement launched in Canada by Saskatchewan NDP has recently attracted fierce criticism from the Opposition. The television ad consists of a series of written phrases where some words fade away letter by letter. The ads, part of a series run by the New Democrats, featured the image of a sheep with a wolf’s head superimposed in a herd of sheep. The critics of the advertisement accused the Saskatchewan Party of being a wolf in sheep’s clothing, with a secret agenda to privatize health care and sell off Crown corporations.

In addition, the words Privatization of the Crowns dissolve in one part of the ad, the letters P, O, R, and N stay up a second longer than the rest. The campaign was launched last week, before what is widely expected to be a fall election call.

Reacting over the issue, Saskatchewan Party MLA Nancy Heppner has said ‘The Sask Party stood for privatization of the Crowns’ dissolves for a split second and morphs into ‘The Sask Party stood for porn’ before the words fade out completely.

Moreover, political television advertisements have earlier also attracted criticism and created problems for political parties in Saskatchewan. In 2006, Saskatchewan Party leader Brad Wall was caught on the wrong foot when he was forced to clarify why Saskatchewan was misspelled, without the letter e.
