Now in Europe employers have right to say no to employ people who smoke. Few eyebrows were raised over an ad published by Irish Call centre stating ‘smokers need not apply’. EU employment chief Vladimir Spidla has made it clear that the ban stated in the ad does not breach any EU anti-discrimination laws.
The EU anti-discrimination law can only prohibit discrimination on the following grounds of ‘racial or ethnic origin, disability, age, sexual orientation and religion and belief in employment and other fields’.
However, the commissioner’s comment met with much criticism from many quarter. Alleging it a bad public policy many groups have said that the discrimination by employers is a continuous process but this ad is a bit overt and depressing.
