The premise: New Zealand is the place to be in if you wish to leave nosy parents out of your personal life. Funny to the extent of being slapstick at times, JWT Auckland has managed a coup for Education New Zealand, with a satiric take on parental interference in Asian homes. A teenager’s worst nightmare would be the presence of his/her parents inside a spa (when he is sharing some intimate moments with his girlfriend, of course!), in a restaurant while a teen couple is talking ‘love’ over chopsticks or a dad’s ‘no consent’ for a teen girl’s glamorous dress. Outlandish though it may seem, one must agree that the commercial weaves a thread of palpable excitement among the audience for the ‘what next’ moment. However, when ‘education’ is the buy-in, a ‘date’ focused theme may not go down too well with certain sections. Not that it would make too much of a difference to the campaign, though. New Zealand, here they come!
