Coping with irresponsible realities

We are such a celebrity-hungry society. We forget ourselves when we are on TV. We intensely want to jettison our anonymity, and unabashedly storm into the limelight. Forgive me, if I am making a cruel, insincere generalization. But, at least admit that the common characteristic of our reality shows is a proof for this celebrity-hungry syndrome.

Who is the biggest loser? Earlier we asked with concerns regarding the possible health hazards of the contestants of the biggest loser show. Indeed, there are opinions for and against regarding that controversial matter. However another controversial and more dangerous trend which is seen on the rise is the irresponsible actions from the reality show participants.

Reality shows do need a reality check about the contestants and their basic behavior. Recent example for the shameless behavior is from that Virginia couple of the “The Real Housewives of D.C.,”, who entered for Whitehouse dinner last month, which raised security alarms later. Remember the misadventures of ‘balloon boy’’ along with this incident, and we have a natural question- is there any sensible screening process in these reality shows?

Indeed, those behind the camera should ask some serious questions to themselves. Should these insensible fame-seekers be given a platform to exhibit their madness? Should there be a sensible, intelligent screening process in reality shows?
