1. Olive oil
Another remedy that can be used while traveling, olive oil makes it difficult for the lice to wander around the head, thereby suffocating and destroying them. Take ample olive oil and massage onto the scalp and hair. Leave it overnight and wash it in the morning. Take a nit comb dipped in vinegar and comb off the nits and dead lice.
2. Custard apple
Custard apple is a powerful insecticide. The dry fruit and as well as the seeds of custard apple have to be crushed to form a paste. Apply on the head and hair and cover with a shower cap. This has to be left overnight or for a full day to take effect. After that one should wash the hair in the morning and comb using a nit comb.
3. Indian lilac
Indian lilac is a strong repellent and helps in preventing lice eggs from hatching. It can imitate insect hormones and confuse the head lice to prevent their multiplication. Indian lilac leaves can be used for the treatment. The lilac oil is to be spread onto the scalp and hair. Leave it for one hour on the scalp and, in the meanwhile, the head should be covered with a shower cap. The lice and nits can then be removed by using a comb dipped in vinegar.
4. Lemon and butter
Lemon and butter have the same effects as that of mayonnaise. They smother the head lice with frequent application. Lemon dilutes the nit glue as well. The mixture is to be left on the scalp for half an hour after the head has been washed. One then needs to dip a nit comb in vinegar and remove the dead lice and dislodged nits. The procedure should be followed for a little more than a week.
5. Vinegar
One can use vinegar for removing all nits that can spread the infection. Dip a nit comb in vinegar and brush your hair. Vinegar dissolves the nit glue and removes the nits smoothly out of the hair. Leave the vinegar on for half an hour and cover your head with a shower cap to prevent evaporation. This can be continued till all nits are removed.
6. Mayonnaise
Application of mayonnaise smothers head lice and kills them. One can apply it on the scalp and hair, and keep it on for an hour by covering the head with a plastic bag. Later, one can use a nit comb for removing the dead lice as well as nits, and wash one’s hair thoroughly. This should be followed for a week until all the lice are dead.
7. Aloe vera
Aloe vera is a medicinal plant beneficial for treating a host of diseases including cancer. The natural insect repellent properties of the plant can be used for treating head lice as well. Aloe vera gel also helps in smothering the lice so that they are all destroyed within two weeks of constant application. To use it, one has to extract the gel from the aloe vera stalk of aloe. Leave it to dry on the scalp for an hour and rinse it off thoroughly.
