In the modern world of high technology, the boundaries between work and personal lives have started diminishing. While technology helps you fulfill your family responsibilities, it also supports your work by making it more mobile. Now, you even have options to work remotely or from home. The work timings have become flexible and you can concentrate more on your personal tasks and priorities. Thus, people can easily juggle roles by making a good use of technological tools. The communication has also increased as cell phones allow you to stay in touch with your family or colleagues at work constantly.

Previously, employees used to face many problems while handling their daily personal tasks like getting the household chores completed. However, with the growth of technology and e-commerce, they can now even do shopping from their workplace. Online banking systems have made it easier to perform financial transactions and bill payments from the comfort of your home or workplace. Internet has even filled the gap between remote places and distant international locations. You can stay connected with your family members even while sitting at a client site. This has happened due to e-mails and online chat systems.

People who work in foreign countries can also stay connected to their parents in their hometowns. All this and more has been made possible by the developing technology. Social media has also played a major role in achieving the work-life balance. It has not left any boundaries uncovered. The tasks you do using cell phones, videoconferencing, e-mails or VoIP can all be done using a single social network. People can now share their images and videos, chat online, send messages, and post informational content through social media platforms. All this can be done from any place in the world, and not just from one’s home or office.

Today, several kinds of video cameras and webcams can be fixed at various facilities for monitoring purposes. For example, these are installed at certain day care centers from where you can directly monitor your child through a website only. If you are at office and your child is at a day care center, these cameras can do the recording and send periodic images to you through a website. You can access that website using your own login ID and password. Even in schools, teachers have started a system to communicate with parents through e-mails.

Thus, you can now access Internet for any kind of communication and required information. Computers, mobiles, answering machines, cameras, software and various such technological tools and equipment have made our lives far easier. Thus, it is also easier to achieve better work-life balance in the modern life.

Secrets to Improving Work-Life Balance

Whether you are man or a woman, work-life balance wouldn’t sound like something you need to worry about until you have spent a good decade of your youth in a workaholic daze. Thanks to the passion and the high of having a job that pays well, most of us don’t notice that we have slipped into a work-heavy routine with little to no room for having a personal life. But there are a lot of little ways in which you can improve your work-life balance with ease.

Plan your week out well

Planning your week will help you streamline everything you need to get done both in your personal life as well as at work. While impromptu office meetings and last minute “urgent” work is hard to account for in such a schedule, a well planned out week will help you remember important family and personal events and chores so you won’t be scrambling to find a co-worker that would stand in for you while you rush to your kid’s soccer match!

Keep score

Once you have learnt how to plan a balanced weekly schedule, you need to master the art of prioritizing. This is called the “keeping score” approach. And what this basically requires is that you place more importance to a work or personal event according to the gravity of the situation. Instead of always being the one that cancels on personal plans to get work done or being the person that is always bailing on work to meet personal commitments, try to keep score of whether you gave importance to work or a personal commitment the last time you had to choose between the two. You can also try keeping score more literally and draw a chart like “work life” and score like a soccer game to keep track of it.

Get a little “me time” everyday

Most people that are struggling to balance life and work often fail to realize how important it is to have at least some “me time” each day. Even if this “me time” is something like you indulging in a smoke during your visit to the loo in the morning or singing while you drive to work or even reading a short story every night before bed, having a ritual that allows you to be by yourself, with your thoughts or a hobby or activity that is dear to your heart will keep you feeling centered. It will also prevent the confusion and sense of feeling overwhelmed that you feel when you don’t get any time for yourself.

If you find it difficult to manage the demands of your job and personal life, then you are not the only person facing this challenge in this modern lifestyle. There are many people who are facing the stress of work and do not find enough time to provide to their families or personal activities. This creates an imbalance of work and life. While it is a common issue, it can be corrected by focusing your attention and time on the things that are under your control. Check out some tips for achieving better work-life balance.

Set priorities

You should first think about all the things that you wish to do in your daily life. Then, set your priorities according to that. These could be your work-related, personal or hobby activities. Just write down everything in a diary according to your priority.

Track time

Start tracking the time spent by you on routine activities. Check all such activities that need not be done or can be delegated. This may help you schedule your time in a better manner. When you have spare time, you can also spend these on the activities lower down on your priority list.

Concentrate on the task

When you are doing something, just do that task only. Forget about multitasking, as it would divide your attention. Your work may be completed quicker if you do it with full dedication. The same way, you should spend quality time with your family when you are doing that. Handling other tasks simultaneously can take away the fun of being with your family.

Mend your personal routine

If you lack sleep daily, have poor nutrition or do not find time to exercise, then you should start prioritizing these tasks. A disturbed personal routine can also disturb your work-life balance.

Take small vacations

When you feel badly stressed out at work, take a small holiday break and go for some rejuvenating activities on your holiday. Regain happiness by taking a break from your work for a while.

Use technology to set boundaries

You may use various technological tools and software to schedule your tasks. Various types of software can be of great help in doing your job quickly and efficiently. Similarly, your mobile devices can give you several options to prioritize your personal schedule. For example, if you are watching a movie with your family, you may switch off your phone or divert your calls for that time. This lets you enjoy every task.

Learn to say ‘No’

If you are overloaded with work, you should simply avoid taking more work. Learn saying ‘No’ to those demands that you cannot promise to fulfill. If there is some urgent task or you are forced to do it, try delegating a few tasks to your team members. This can reduce the load on your routine.
