Samsung Gear S - Review

Samsung has recently launched its new wearable in the form of Gear S, which is not only a smartwatch but also acts as a smartphone companion. Check out what Samsung offers in its new creation.

Appearance –

Samsung Gear S is an attempt at creating a standalone device that can handle a variety of things on its own while not just being a phone accessory. This 66-gram device actually looks like a phone wrapped on your wrist. However, it does not appear to be clumsy. It has a nice curved design, but with a huge screen. You can also find a home button on the screen below the display. While some people may find the chrome-edged screen too big for their wrists, some others may like it too. The gadget is also installed with a microphone and speakers. It has several sensors, including optical heart rate, UV, barometer, compass and gyroscope, ambient light and accelerometer.

Performance —

Gear S has its own cell service and data. While it easily pairs up with your smartphone, it also has its own slot for a SIM card and allows you to make calls. It is a nice combination of a smartwatch and smartphone. However, you will still require a Samsung smartphone to operate many of its features. Since Gear S can only run limited software and apps from Samsung, it cannot be compared with the vastness of Android wear. This is a performance point where Gear S lags behind some other wearable gadgets. It has good connectivity through 3G cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. The device has a dual-core processor, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of storage capacity.

Ease of use —

This smartwatch is easy to use, as it has an adjustable strap in the form of a rubbery plastic band with a clip to ensure proper fit. However, it may not appeal some people, as it does not appear to be durable. Additionally, its 2-inch AMOLED display, with a resolution of 480×360 pixels, makes it quite user friendly. This vibrant and colorful display has the right glow to make you see the text clearly. On the other hand, it is not easy to type on the keyboard that it displays, while you may use its voice recognition tool conveniently. Its phone features also do not make it more convenient to call from this smartwatch. It is better to make calls from your regular smartphone. However, the device is fine to use when it is paired with your phone to receive notifications.

Quality —

Samsung has made a decent attempt to combine various features of a smartwatch and smartphone in Gear S. However, it still needs improvement in terms of performance of its features. Overall, it is a good-quality gadget for a modern user.

Value for money –

At $350, Gear S is a slightly expensive deal when we compare its features and performance with several other branded smartwatches.
