Natural food has always surpassed preserved and synthetic food. All nutrients present in fruits are responsible for providing protection against illness, says a new study. As per the research from the University of Milan, vitamin C plays a vital role for the growth and is essential for human body. Citrus fruits, like oranges, cantaloupe, strawberries, tomatoes and broccoli are rich in vitamin C and thus they should be consumed rather than vitamin tablets.

For long vitamin C has been known to protect common cold, healing wounds and for giving strength to gums and muscles. It also makes body resistant to many diseases. Nevertheless many people depend on vitamin tablets, as they believe that these tablets have the same affects as fruits do. However this new research shows that there are no substitutes for fruits and vegetables. During the research, volunteers were divided into two categories. One of them was given a glass of orange juice, while the other took vitamin C-fortified water, or sugar water. Later it was found the DNA of those who consumed the orange juice was less prone to ailments in comparison to the one’s who consumed the vitamin C-fortified water or sugar water.

Dr Serena Guarnieri of the Nature magazine and David Heber, director of the Centre for Human Nutrition at the University of California said:

It appears that vitamin C is not the only chemical responsible for antioxidant protection; there is something more at work here. Vitamin C is provided in a matrix in fruits with many other beneficial substances.

The findings have once again fortified the fact that there is no substitute for natural fruits.
