Boozing shrinks your brain

Drinking alcohol excessively may hit your brain hard. A new study came up with this conclusion after scanning brains of about 1,839 volunteers aged 34 to 88 who were categorized as non-drinkers, low drinkers, moderate drinkers or higher drinkers. As per the findings of this study, the more people drank on a regular basis, the more their brain volume decreased.

During the course of study, researchers found to their utter surprise that participants with about 14 drinks had an average 1.6 reduction in the ratio of brain volume to skull size when compared with no-drinkers. Moreover, this reduction in brain volume moved on at an average of about 0.25 per cent for every jump in drinking category.

Another thing that came to fore during this study states that reduction in brain volume was more in women when compared with men. In addition, women in their 70s were found more affected with alcohol-related brain reduction. If seen in the present scenario then this revelation points to quite a grim situation, lying ahead for countries like Britain where alcohol consumption has soared up by 21 per cent just in the past five years, which shows that that people in these countries are at an increased risk of brain damage and neurological disorders.

However, it is worth mentioning that this is not for the first time when alcohol consumption has been associated with reduction in brain volume as studies conducted earlier have also associated alcohol consumption with brain shrinkage.
