Scrapie may affect human hearts too

Scrapie is a brain wasting disease of sheep. When mice are infected with a kind of scrapie, their brain contained a high level of the scrapie agent even after two years of infection occurred.

The research revealed that heart infection was said as an unrecognized aspect of scrapie earlier. The study may create a way to know better about human amyloid heart disease also.

Scrapie comes in the family of prion diseases that include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy or “mad cow” disease in cattle, and chronic wasting disease in deer and elk.

The journal ‘Science’ has published the report in the online edition. It says that, the new research will help cardiologists with an animal model to study amyloidosis, a form of human heart disease.
