RU-486 causes worry over women deaths

According to U.S. health experts, the RU-486 abortion pill is causing a deadly bacterial infection in women. The CDC, Food and Drug Administration and National Institute of Health are looking for the experts’ advice in this matter.

Two deadly bacteria, Clostridium sordellii and Clostridium difficile are a scrupulous worry, as antibiotic resistance grows and infections occur in people. The drug is made by Danco Laboratories LLC. The other names for RU-486 are Mifeprex or mifepristone.

Six women died since 2000, who had taken the drug. Four died from Clostridium infection, one was said unrelated, and the other is being investigated. However, experts didn’t link directly the deaths to the drug.

Ten other infections also have been reported in women who had given birth or had miscarriages. Several women’s groups and RU-486 supporters said, it needed more research, while abortion challengers said, the data showed the risk linked to the pill.
