Road to cancer prevention: Vitamin D

Of late, there has been a lot of hype regarding Vitamin D as one of the main factors in preventing cancer.
However, how particularly Vitamin D is effective in preventing cancer risk needs to be put in proper perspective.

A deficiency of Vitamin D is undoubtedly the road to increased cancer risk. But that does not mean that one starts taking high dosage of it. In fact, a high dosage of Vitamin D is as harmful as a deficient one. Increased level of Vitamin D draws out the calcium from the bones if there is not enough calcium circulating in the blood.

Also, as an old saying goes, excess of everything is bad. Same goes for Vitamin D, too much of it can be toxic.

So the golden rule remains a balanced approach. Not less, not more, but to maintain a balance of nutrients in the body. If you think you need Vitamin D supplements, most probably you also need to add calcium and magnesium in your diet.

Get a balanced meal and good exposure to sunlight. Exposure to sunlight doesn’t mean burning oneself, but allowing your body to soak up the sunrays for sufficient time. A simple walk in the morning sun for 15 minutes helps your body to make enough Vitamin D naturally.
