Research: Fosfomycin may treat listeriosis

‘Nature Medicine’ has reported that researchers have discovered a new treatment for listeriosis, a deadly form of food poisoning. Professor Jose Vazquez-Boland, one of the researchers, has shown that an antibiotic, fosfomycin, can treat Listeria in the body.

However it is not effective in laboratory conditions. So, this drug never considered for listeriosis. Though it reaches the infection sites more efficiently than any other antibiotics. The Listeria bacteria activate repeatedly a brain infection and kills 30 percent of affected people usually.

The findings notify that laboratory methods currently in use should be revised. It is necessary to find out the vulnerability of bacteria to such drugs. Then the tests reveal better what truly happens in the body.
