Open-heart surgery on a 2-day-old baby in India

A two-year-old boy went through an open-heart surgery in Patna, India. The baby was born on June 17 and just after the birth, that baby’s health was started deteriorating. The baby was suffering from a complicated congenital heart defect called pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect. About ninety percent of the patients of this problem do not survive.

According to the surgeon, Dr. Ajit Pradhan, there was no forward blood flow from right side of the heart to the lungs. Dr. Pradhan and his team of experts performed the operation that took more than six hours.Baby’s condition is stable now.

Patna is emerging fast as a preferred place for Bihar’s heart patients. Some times ago, a seven-year old boy’s heart was operated successfully. He was suffering from a complex heart defect called “tetralogy of fallot” (blue baby).
