Low iodine diet

Low Iodine Diet is beneficial for people who have certain allergies, who have had scanning or treatment and who can’t tolerate iodine rich foods. Iodine is used to feed animals, prepare foods and process foods. Iodine is present in majority of the foods and beverages we consume in our daily life.

Low Iodine Diet ensures that an individual eats foods which are low in iodine or have no iodine content. The diet is an excellent solution for the people who can’t tolerate iodine temporarily or permanently. You are recommended to have calcium supplements in this diet. The supplements must be 1000 to 1200mg of calcium carbonated.

Dairy:

  • You are allowed to have non from this category.
  • You must avoid cheese, pudding, ice cream, yogurt, sour cream and eggnog.

Protein:

  • Consume small portions of chicken, beef, veal, pork and turkey.
  • Avoid cured meats, bacon, sausage, liver, eggs, chipped beef and ham.

Fish:

  • Don’t consume any item from this category.
  • Say no to tuna, kelp, shellfish, seaweed, sardines and canned tuna.

Starches/Grains:

  • Pasta (without salt), homemade rice and fresh potatoes are allowed to eat.
  • You are not allowed to consume cold cereals, packaged rice, packaged pasta, cookies, pastry and egg noodles.

Fruits:

  • Consume fresh fruits, juices and smoothies.
  • Don’t go for dried or canned fruits.

Vegetables:

  • Eat from all fresh vegetables except spinach. You can also have homemade tomato sauce.
  • Ignore frozen and canned veggies, sauces with pickles and jars of pasta sauce.

Snacks:

  • You are allowed to consume popcorn (without salt), unsalted rice cakes and sorbet.
  • It is recommended to avoid eating salted chips, crackers, jello, milk chocolate, candy, pretzels and corn chips.

Beverages:

  • Have sprite or 7up, black coffee, tea, water and homemade lemonade.
  • You must avoid Kool Aid, sodas, lemonade, mineral water, beer, iced tea and other beverages containing sodium.
