Is hospital stay as risky as bungee jumping?

We talk about developing medical science and life saving technology, artificial limbs and machines controlled by thought and blah blah, we go on and on. But, when we will be sensible enough to perfect ourselves on what we already have gained. Don’t rave about what I am talking about. ‘British Medical Journal’ confirms that more than a haunting number of 90,000 patients die as a result of mistakes during medication in UK.

Almost 8.7-10 percent of such patients could have been living if not for the mistakes committed in the hospitals. Mistakes involve wrong diagnosis, mistakes during surgery, infections, and misinformation about the patient’s case history included allergies and sensitivity towards drug or specific medications.

Now, not all mishaps happen due to the mistakes committed by individuals. There are cases, which could have been saved if the staff would have been trained well for such situations or with the right amount of information.

Prof Trevor Sheldon, who authored the study in the British ‘Medical Journal’ thinks a stay in the hospital is as ‘Risky as bungee jumping’. So, all this talk of developing technology goes for a toss, when we are not careful and informed.

Next time, the physician asks you to get hospitalized, think twice before you do so. Are you putting your life at risk after all?
