HIV rate in pregnant Russian women increases 10 times during last five years

Russian chief sanitary physician Gennady Onishchenko has said that Russia is facing larger cases of HIV infections. Moreover, HIV infection cases in pregnant women have increased ten times during last five years.

He was delivering his speech at the second All-Russian conference ‘Health of the Nation: A Basis for Prosperity of Russia’. HIV infected mothers gave birth to 13,000 babies in 2005, while 1000 of babies were left in hospitals.

Moscow has a special House of Infants and a special unit at the AIDS Centre for isolated infants to provide proper medical observation. Russia has more than 313,000 registered HIV cases until now, including 13,000 children.
