'Gardasil', the cancer drug moves for FDA approval

The drug company Merck has developed a vaccine, Gardasil, to protect females from cervical cancer. The vaccine blocks two kinds of human papillomavirus HPV that is responsible for seventy percent of all cervical cancers. The vaccine will protect from most cases of genital warts too.

At the same time, the experts say that a yearly Pap test is the best technique to find cervical cancer cells. Gardasil expects to be effective for at least five years. It works better in sexually inactive people. Further, the company is panning to apply this vaccine on boys and men also.

This vaccine is now moved to the Food and Drug Administration to get final approval. The GlaxoSmithKline is also planning to get consent for another cervical cancer vaccine called Cervarix.
