Sleep deprivation stops growth of new memory cells

You might have heard that going night after night without sleep may turn you forgetful but do you know why. This time a new study has come out uncovering the reason behind this after conducting some tests on lab mice.

Researchers studied the impact of sleep deprivation on these rats and found that due to lack of sleep stress hormones agglomerate in a particular part of brain, called hippocampus. As a result, the growth of new cells that increase memory recedes.

Telling more about this research Elizabeth Gould, head of the team at Princeton University said, ‘This decrease in neuron production coincided with an increase in the major rodent stress hormone, corticosterone.’ Through this study, once again it has been proved that sleep deprivation may weaken memory. That is the reason why experts take profound sleep as a key to keep up memory.
