Drinking more coffee delays the onset of blepharospasm

Any news that says coffee is good excites me, as it gives more reasons to increase the number of cups I consume. So, here is another great news that added to my pleasure and yours too, if you are a java addict.

blepharospasm 2112

Italian researchers say that coffee protects against blepharospasm (eyelid) spasms that can lead to blindness.

What is blepharospasm? According to NEI, blepharospasm is an abnormal, involuntary blinking or spasm of the eyelids. Blepharospasm is associated with an abnormal function of the basal ganglion, a part of the brain responsible for controlling the muscles and usually affects people ages between 50 and 70. The symptoms may include eye irritation and discomfort, sensitivity to light and increased blinking.

They conducted a study on the effects of coffee and smoking on about 166 people with blepharospasm. A comparison was made with the smoking and drinking habits of people suffering from the disease. It was found that people who drank coffee were less likely to develop the condition and also the onset of the disease was pushed by 19 months for each additional cup per day. It was also found that smoking made no difference to the condition.

Our findings raise doubt about the association of smoking and blepharospasm but strongly suggest coffee as a protective factor. The most obvious candidate for the protective effect is caffeine, but the low frequency of decaffeinated coffee intake in Italy prevented us from examining the effects of caffeine on blepharospasm.

says Professor Defazio, who was involved in the study.

Okey, now you know why we should be drinking more coffee, go have a cup now!
