Chromium provide no help in diabetes control

Generally people who have type 2 diabetes take chromium components to control their blood sugar level, but a recent Dutch study put a question mark over the use of chromium by diabetic patients.

Dr. Nanno Kleefstra said that: In non-Western diabetic peoples, there are few good proofs which show that use of chromium is helpful. While in western peoples there is no such case or evidence which can help in saying that chromium works and its use is beneficial.

Kleefstra, from Isala Clinics in Zwolle and his team — studied the effects of chromium in type 2 diabetes patients living in north side of the Netherlands. Nearly 57 patients were randomly asked to consume 400 micrograms of chromium per day or a placebo.

After the medication of three and six months, it was found that there were no such differences between the chromium group and the placebo group.

In western patients, chromium is not proving too effective to take control of blood sugar level, most probably because they already receive sufficient percentage of chromium required.

The researcher added that further study is still needed; more concerns are now to have a look on chromium deficient population. And for this, a tool is required which would help in detecting whether the patient is chromium deficient or not.

The researcher’s presented their report in the medical journal Diabetes Care.
