Treating a dog bite victim

dog bite 246

Dog bites are quite common amongst injuries that people usually sustain in day-to-day life.

Gone are the days when 14 syringes were injected into your stomach if u had a dog bite.

Today, the treatment is relatively easy. There are certain precautions, which need to be taken care of by a bite victim. First of all, the dog and the victim should be separated, so that the dog doesn’t turn back to bite again. If it’s a pet dog, consult the owner immediately to enquire whether the dog has had proper vaccination or not. If the dog isn’t, or if it’s a stray dog, you may need shots for rabies.

Clean the area with dettol and water. Few experts suggest running water over the wound for at least five minutes to be sure to rinse everything away. And make sure the bleeding stops. If bleeding doesn’t stop quickly, you may need to head to the emergency room for stitches.

As a first aid to the victim, use antibiotic ointment. Cover the wound with a clean, dry bandage or sterile gauze. Watch for infection — redness, swelling, pus, pain, and heat. If you are looking after a person who has been bitten by a dog and is bleeding, be sure to protect yourself before administering any first aid. Be sure that you wear gloves to prevent contact with the infected person’s blood.

After following these simple steps one needs to rush the patient to the doctor for a tetanus shot.
