China boy gets his heart at the right place, finally

The highly debated ‘Unprotected Heart’ was operated successfully at Shanghai Children’s hospital on June 22. The surgeons operated the series of imperfections in the chest and abdomen of Chen Jiakun, the 7-year-old boy.

They successfully put his heart back into his chest. He was suffering from “Pentalogy of Cantrell,” with congenital heart disease and sternum abnormalities.

Earlier, anyone could see Chen’s heart beats on his chest protected by his skin only.

During the five-hour operation, Professor Jia Bing restored the pericardium, cut five limbs at the joints on both sides of the chest. He moved it to the middle.

At last, he repaired the defective diaphragm, put the trasversum back into the belly, and remade the abdominal wall. The boy is now in the intensive care unit for two days. His heart is reported functioning well.
