Child's cry: Religious customs or medical ethics

There was a clash between medical ethics and religious beliefs in Pretoria Academic Hospital on Sunday afternoon, as one of the Jewish twins, born on September 20 was given a blood transfusion. The baby, suffering from anemia, was administered alternative medicines as his grandmother had signed a form, during admission, which denied blood transfusion as per Jewish customs.
However, the docs got a court order on Saturday night overriding the family’s decision. Though delayed tranfusion is delaying recovery, docs have acted as per medical ethics. The grandmother needs to shelve her beliefs as they were the root cause of the baby’s deteriorating health.May be she did not realize that a blood transfusion delayed would be life denied to the baby.
