You can fry, boil, bake, poach them or even consume them raw. Yes, I am talking about the highly popular breakfast items- ‘eggs’. Many would find their breakfast incomplete without eggs and what would happen to cakes, souffles, frittata and other yummy egg-based recipes if one day the eggs seized to exist?

Egg fans should be proud of their passion for eggs because eggs are packed with scores of nutritious compounds that are of great significance in maintaining our well-being. With a caloric value of just 68 calories, an egg is a healthy food item that provides compounds such as tryptophan, selenium, molybdenum, phosphorous, iodine, choline, Vitamins B2, B5, B12 and D that are beneficial to our health. In addition, about 5.5 grams of protein is obtained from an egg.

Eggs are suggested to play a role in improving brain health and function by way of their choline content, about 300 micrograms in one egg. This constituent of eggs is required for formation of various lipid molecules such as sphingomyelin as well as phosphatidylcholine that form a major part of the brain structure. It is also a constituent of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. In addition to choline, eggs also contain high content of phosphatidylcholine that is important to the membrane structure of various cells in the body.

Apart from brain function, other benefits offered by eggs include preventing the formation of blood clots, protecting against age-related cataracts and macular degeneration, improving heart health and cholesterol profile. Many people avoid eating eggs owing to their high cholesterol content but recent scientific research has brought to the surface the fact that it is the saturated fats in the diet and not the dietary cholesterol that have an impact on the blood cholesterol levels. Therefore, eating an egg or two a day in conjunction with a healthy balanced diet is not such a bad idea.

Indeed, eggs are good for our health and there is no doubt why the National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) chose to have the slogan “Sunday ho ya Monday, roz khao Ande”.
