Arielle Newman, a standout cross-country and track-and-field star was the captain of the track team at Notre Dame Academy in Staten Island, N.Y. The award winning cross-country runner, was found dead by her mother Alice Newman in their Castleton Corners home.

Police are investigating the young star’s final moments to see if foul play was involved during a night out with friends.

Devastated at her 17 year old daughter’s death, Mrs Newman, remembering the fateful day, laments that her daughter had been to a party at Boulder Creek Steakhouse in Bulls Head that day where she was hassled by a few guys.

The tragedy that struck Newman family was triggered by an overdose of muscle-pain-relieving creams by Arielle. Doctors warn against using painkillers as they contain a substance known as methyl salicylate, which if used in excess can prove harmful, as in the case of Arielle.

This was the first time New York City Medical Examiner’s Office reported a death from the use of sports cream.

Millions of consumers use such over-the-counter products to relieve pain from aching muscles. Doctors say if used in moderation, the products are safe.
