Dr.Barr, the acting deputy director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, dismissed all rumors of bird flu in Australia, after three pigeons, in a shipment of 105 pigeons, were reported to carry avian influenza antibodies as they were imported from Melbourne to Canada.
Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran blamed Canada of “testing anomalies”, as they have sent birds already exposed to bird flu. Health Minister, Tony Abbott announced immunization of Australians against this virus, apprehending a virus spread from those people who were engaged in the culling of pigeons.Dr. Barr, who had declared bird flu non-existential in Australia, now doubts its capacity to become a human pandemic.
Well, Dr.Barr doesn’t have to worry as EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou, has asserted that chances of a human pandemic in Europe is rare and it will continue to be so in Australia if poultry checks and migratory birds are properly monitored.
