Asthma drugs may cause Cataract in older people

Anti-asthma drugs may cause cataracts in elder patients of asthma or lung diseases. A Canadian research team has gone through the data of more than 100,000 patients of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The researchers have found that the use of inhaled corticosteroids, in fact, raise the risk of developing cataracts in people of more than 65 years of age. The European Respiratory Journal has published the study report.

Dr. Samy Suissa, an epidemiologist at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal and author of the study, has said that doctors should use the information if the use of inhaled corticosteroids is needed. He has advised the physicians, further, to recommend anti-leukotriene combination therapy to decrease the risk of cataracts in the place of an inhaled corticosteroid.
