What to Do Before Starting a Blog

Starting a blog might sound like a fun way to connect with others, make some new friends and even share your expertise, but you may want to start one because you hope to earn some money too. Whether you see ad space, become an affiliate-marketing expert or sell products on that blog yourself, you can watch your profits grow as you put more work into the blog.

Long before that blog goes live and you post a single thing, there are some key things you should do.

Decide on a Layout

starting a blog

Deciding on a layout is one of the first things you’ll want to do. No matter which blog platform you choose, you’ll find a few options available to you. Many people pick a basic layout that includes links on both sides of the pages, headers across the top of the page and posts that go down the center of the page in a straight line.

You can also place a small portion of the article on the front page and include a link that readers must click on to view the whole thing. Blog platforms offer magazine layouts too that include a short preview on the home page to the full blog post.

Check Names

Using a free platform is a smart way to save money until your blog becomes more popular, but you’ll eventually want to move your blog to its own page. Before your blog goes live, make sure that you check available domain names. There is nothing worse than doing a lot of work, marketing your blog and gaining a lot of followers only to find out that someone already owns the domain that uses the same name as your blog. Checking for a name ahead of time can help you save some frustrations later.

Pick Tags

Tags refer to the words and phrases listed on the bottom of a post that explain what the post is about. When a reader wants to know more about a specific term, he or she can click that word and view all the posts you made on the subject. Choosing tags ahead of time can help you stay on track and decide what to write about on your blog. You can also use those tags to post unique articles that do not repeat the same information or use the same keywords multiple days in a row.

Create Posts

create posts

The more posts your blog has, the more potential you have to reach readers. If a blog has hundreds of posts, there is a greater chance that it will contain the keywords and phrases that readers look for online. You can start reaching readers right off the bat with posts that you write in advance. Your blog can go live with multiple posts already available for viewing.

Most platforms now let you post in advance too. This lets you schedule one or more posts that will go live on your blog over the next few days or weeks.

Though running a blog can help you make some money, it’s not something you can do without a plan in mind. Creating posts in advance and using tags can help you reach readers. You’ll also want to think about layout and make sure the domain you want is available.
