Why Are 1,800 Babies Still Born With HIV Each Day?

The World Health Organization has warned that about 1,800 babies are born with HIV each day. It is because their mothers do not get the drugs they need! It is astounding, that under 10% of pregnant women with HIV in developing countries received antiretroviral drugs in two years — between 2003 and 2005, according to a report by the WHO.

That a total of 1.3 million now get the drugs, which is short of the target of 3 million set by the WHO and UNAids is also revealed. Blame stigma against living with HIV and misinformation about the disease for lack of prevention, care and treatment efforts everywhere. Peter Piot, executive director of UNAids worries on this prevailing condition.
