When hair dye turns you into an 'Elephant Woman'

reaction from hair colo64
Stacy Ditroia, 16, had never thought that hair color that she was using on her locks would actually transform her into an ‘Elephant woman’. Thanks to L’Oreal treatment which she had used to turn her hair chocolate brown.

No doubt, now Stacy is recovering fast and interestingly, company (L’Oreal) has also offered to pay her to have tests but question remains unanswered that how far using such brand-products is safe. Defending their product company spokesman said that potential reactions can be detected by carrying out the skin allergy test as directed, 48 hours before using the products, every time it is used. However, in Stacy’s case we find her fully following the instructions. As she claims:

I did the 48-hour patch test behind my ear and there was no reaction, so two days later I put the dye on my hair. But soon afterwards, my scalp started itching horribly. I wanted to tear my head off. The following day my hairline went bright red, I felt really hot, and the sides of my neck hurt as if the glands were swollen.

Personally, I believe that some more effective methods should be carved out to know whether a particular product would affect negatively or not, because small patch behind the ear may not fully exhibit the indication of reaction. Sharing similar view Becky, from UK, says:

I used to use hair dyes like this one a lot as a teenager and into my early twenties. I had an episode where my eyes and forehead swelled up to a large degree – not SO bad as this poor girl suffered – but it was grim. Since then I have very sensitive glands in my neck and suffer from a lot of swelling in the face, head and neck area. Please dig deeper, as these products are just sold in shops for anyone to use. And a patch test on a tiny skin area obviously isn’t sufficient.
