Gene responsible for male fertility found

Various experiments related to male infertility have been carried out till date. US researchers recently found the gene that may be ultimately responsible for final stages of sperm cell formation. Although, as of now tests have been carried out on laboratory mice only.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at the Chappel Hill recently found out the issues related to the male infertility. Yi Zhang, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the university’s school of medicine said,

Because this gene has a very specific effect on the development of functional sperm, it holds great potential as a target for new infertility treatments.

The statistics prove that about 1 out of 6 couples in the U.S. have difficulty producing a child. Going by the records of the National Institute of Health, out of 30-40 percent of these 2.6 million couples, most men have been found infertile. I think this is a sad and unfortunate fact of life.

The discovery of the particular gene responsible for male infertility, will eventually lead to the the development of the drug that will help which will make up for the infertility. The research was funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as well as the National Institutes of Health. Also, Professor Zhang’s study appeared in the journal Nature.
