The Milky Controversy in Quebec

Recently, milk producers in Quebec faced some flak from the media regarding the hygiene and cleanliness standards of milk-transporting tankers.

On October 4, a Montreal daily Le Devoir reported a study conducted by the Agricultural Department, which stated that about a quarter of milk transport tankers contained alarming amounts of sediment like ‘cow hair, hay and suspended fat, bugs and traces of animal excrement’, thus rendering it unfit and unhygienic for human consumption.

The milk producers however, pushed aside the allegation saying that some amount of sediment is perfectly natural in raw milk and that the reports did not mention animal excrement among the sediments which meant that all other impurities could easily be sieved out.

The representatives also stated that hay and cow hair were not hazardous to human health. Besides, all milk from the tankers is purified, processed, pasteurized and homogenized so that it is made safe for human use before it reaches consumers.

Guylaine Gosselin, the manager of the producers federation, further clarified that this study was in fact carried out by the federation to gauge the efficiency of the current filtration system and efforts are being made to improve upon areas that are lacking.
