If you think that blood from the blood bank will save you, think again! Last few years have witnessed an increased level of heart attack and stroke in the patients who received the blood transfusion from the blood banks. In these cases, instead of saving the life, saved blood became the killer.
How so? Well, no matter how much oxygen is carried by the R.B.C’s, the oxygen won’t permeate to the tissue without the help of nitric oxide. Transfused blood often has less nitric oxide. The level is crucial in a parent’s survival. So, the lack of a certain level of nitric oxide becomes life threatening.
The Duke university researchers were successful in proving this transfused blood theory. Dr.Jonathan Stalmer along with Dr. Timothy Mc Mohan were part of the study.The research was funded by the following folks: National Institutes of Health, Duke Anesthesiology Fund, the American Heart Association and N30 Pharma. After reading and writing about this, I will think twice before I make a pit stop at the blood bank.
