Newer class of drug called, aromatase inhibitor is far better than traditionally used breast cancer drug called, tamoxifen since researchers found that women who switched from tamoxifen to aromatase inhibitors lived comparatively longer. Researchers have reached this conclusion after looking at two studies of 828 women.
More interesting is the fact that where tamoxifen has been associated with some side effects like strokes and endometrial cancer, the new drug has been dubbed as free from such side effects. However, still tamoxifen is being given the first priority while treating patients with breast cancer. As the following words of Dr. Lauren Cassell of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York reveals:
…but tamoxifen remains the main option for younger women with breast cancer.
Here it is important to know that aromatase inhibitors are meant only for women who are post- menopausal. This finding is quite interesting. However, how far this new class of medicine is safer, only time will tell.
