Stroke is a medical emergency

Strokes need care and stroke care needs more improvement in the UK. According to the committee of public accounts, better stroke care may save hundreds of people each year.

Edward Leigh, the chair of the committee, has criticized the NHS for not treating strokes well and commented on the Department of Health for not taking strokes as a medical emergency.

More than 110,000 people of all ages suffer from stroke every year. This counts among top three causes of death in UK. Stroke, sometimes, lead to adult disability.

The most of the strokes are curable, combined treatment costs in the UK are £7 billion per year. This is £2.8 billion more than is spent on treating heart disease patients.

Stroke patients, most of the times, let down by slow access to diagnosis and treatment. If patients are not treated quickly, the symptoms become worse and prove costly in future.
