First 'grow your own' knee transplant successful

Shivaun McGuckin has become the first British woman who has undergone a revolutionary ‘grow your own’ cartilage transplant. This treatment went ahead by using a 3D implant that uses healthy cells, which is later on attached into the damaged knee cartilage.

The most enticing feature of this new technique is that it does not take more than two weeks to get adequate cells for carrying out this kind of operation. On the other end, traditional cartilage repair systems took months for this. At the same time where other surgeries take a long time to heal up fully, this new technique take just 6 to 12 months and after that patient can turn back to his normal routine.

This new technique may do wonders, especially for the patients with osteoarthritis and cartilage damage. It would also not be grandiloquent to say that this new technique may bring a new ray of hope to people who are facing problems due to cartilage damage and osteoarthritis.

The following words of Phil Davies, managing director of distributors’ Plus Orthopadeics UK, well express the bright future of this new technique:

The options now open to the surgeon are considerably enhanced and I’m sure this type of treatment will lead to a much better success rate for patients who are experiencing problems.
