Plastic bottles harmful for health

Has the time arrived for us to move back to the old glass containers as new studies are showing that plastic bottles can cause immense harm to our body? Bisphenol A or BPA, a polycarbonate plastic material that is used in making plastic bottles can cause neural and behavioral problems in fetuses, infants and children. BPA exposure may also lead to early puberty and prostate and breast cancer. The US environmental group, Center for Health, Environment and Justice and the National Toxicology Program, that is part of the U.S. government’s National Institute of Health along with a number of health activist groups have expressed their concern over the use of BPA plastic bottles.

Canada is planning to ban polycarbonate plastic baby bottles. Wal-Mart, the largest retail chain in the world, had announced that it intends to stop selling polycarbonate plastic baby bottles from early next year while introducing more BPA-free products. Various U.S. states including California, Maryland, Minnesota and Michigan are considering banning BPA products.

BPA is used in many baby bottles and in the plastic lining of cans of infant formula. BPA can also be found in the food and drinking packages, compact discs and medical devices. Even some dental sealants contain BPA. Studies have shown that laboratory rodents exposed to similar levels of BPA as human exposure developed precancerous lesions in the prostate and mammary glands.
