Patched up heart: Scientists develop stem cells to fix heart

stemcells

The stem cells research and cloning are extremely controversial topics. Despite the existing controversy over stem cells, scientists made pretty good advances in the stem cells field. Recently, they developed a stem-cells patch that can fix any damage caused to the heart after a heart attack.

A researcher from London’s Imperial college came up with this brilliant idea. Sian Harding along with her team made this excellent life saving discovery. The researchers developed a biocompatible scaffold to form the basis of the heart patch.

The heart suffers scarring during a heart attack or rather a myocardial infarct. The cells are oxygen starved due to low blood supply and they slowly die. The job of the latest patch is to cover up this scarred area in the heart. It seems to me that the people at the Imperial college have done a good job of making the patch function properly.

Several groups throughout the world are working on a similar heart patch. But, it’s highly imperative that the heart cells work properly after the patch up. The patch is currently being implemented on the lab animals. Although, scientists expect to try this stem cells patch on human within the next few years. I guess it would be nice to have you heart patched up after surviving an attack.
